Minnesota rules
Who can prescribe in Minnesota?
Look for the person making the care decision. Ask for their full name and the kind of license they hold.
Minnesota rules checked October 1, 2026. This is the check date, not the date each rule took effect.
Check each prescribing role’s permission
Prescribing medicine counts as practicing medicine under Minnesota law.
For doctors, the usual ways to get permission are a Minnesota medical license or the state’s special registration for online care from another state.
Online care is also called telehealth. It can mean a video visit.
A nurse practitioner can prescribe
In Minnesota, a nurse practitioner’s own nursing license permits them to identify health problems and prescribe medicines.
New nurse practitioners must spend at least 2,080 hours working under a written plan with a doctor or an experienced nurse practitioner.
After that period, Minnesota does not require a nurse practitioner to have a supervising doctor.
Rules changed on August 1, 2026 to allow an experienced nurse practitioner as that partner.
The nurse partner needs at least three years of practice as a nurse practitioner or in another advanced nursing role, and experience with similar health problems.
For care beyond general health or mental health, those first hours must be in a place where doctors and advanced-practice nurses work together.
A physician assistant can also prescribe
A physician assistant, also called a PA, can identify health problems and prescribe in Minnesota under a written plan called a practice agreement.
A licensed doctor at the same practice must review that agreement each year.
The agreement stays at the practice; it is not a public record patients can search.
Ask who makes the decision and who gives the treatment
Minnesota lets doctors assign some care tasks to qualified staff.
Nurses may give medicines when directed by a prescriber or following an approved protocol, a set plan for care.
Ask separately who will examine you, who will write any prescription and who will give any treatment. Write down each person’s name and role.
